Maurice Thornton
Managing Director at headcount

meet Maurice
I work across the full picture—supporting clients, candidates, and the internal team—with much of my work centred around senior and high-level mandates.
Based in Zurich, I bring a mix of scientific background, commercial experience, and a strong focus on the human side of recruitment.
at a glance
My role at headcount
I lead the business while staying closely involved in the work itself. That includes client engagement, supporting the team, shaping strategy, and staying hands-on with important searches.
I work across both the commercial and people side of the business, helping keep headcount focused, clear, and connected to the people we work with.
Background & expertise
My background combines science, sales, and service. I studied Toxicology at the University of Toronto and started my career in pre-clinical research before moving into sales and, eventually, recruitment.
I also spent time working in restaurants and bars, which taught me a lot about people, communication, and reading situations quickly.
What I bring to the team
I bring a strong understanding of the human side of recruitment, together with a direct, honest, and straightforward way of working. After 20 years in life science recruitment, especially across senior and high-level mandates, I’ve learned that good decisions often come down to clarity, trust, and understanding what people really need. My perspective has been shaped by science, sales, service, and years of working closely with clients, candidates, and colleagues.
my approach
How I came to headcount
I started out in science, working in pre-clinical research, but my background is broader than that.
I also spent time in sales, and before that worked in restaurants and bars, which taught me a lot about people, communication, and reading situations quickly. I got into recruitment through a friend I had worked with in a bar, and the move ended up bringing together a lot of the things I was naturally drawn to – people, business, and the life sciences space. Over time, that experience led me to build and lead headcount.
My philosophy
For me, the most important part of recruitment is the human element. Titles, processes, and market knowledge all matter, but in the end, it comes down to understanding people properly and being clear with them.
In practice, that means being honest, direct, and consistent, whether I am working with clients, candidates, or the internal team.
I am motivated by building long-term relationships and by helping shape teams that can really make a difference.
behind the profile
Outside work, you’ll usually find me spending time with family and catching up with friends over good food.
My superpower is reading the human side of a situation. I’m interested in what people say, what they mean, and what needs to be understood before a good decision can happen.
Something I’ve learned after 20 years in recruitment: most hiring problems are not talent shortages. They are clarity problems.
